Welcome From Our PresidentWelcome to our website. I would like to extend an invitation for you to visit us. First UU Church of Nashville is a wonderful community of warm, friendly people who care for each other and for the world around them. We welcome visitors. Unitarian Universalism is a religious practice centered on principles rather than required beliefs. Our practices draw on many traditions such as Judeo-Christian, Islam, eastern religions, paganism and religious humanism. Each of us is encouraged to develop our own spiritual path in a community of love, free religious inquiry, and social action. We have an active children’s religious education program that teaches our children and youth the values and principles we share. It exposes them to a wide variety of religious beliefs and encourages them to understand and appreciate the good in all of them. Similarly, our adult religious education program examines many aspects of religious life. Topics as varied as world religions, meditation, simple living, and discussion on peacemaking are offered weekly. Sunday morning worship services are held in our beautiful light-filled sanctuary. Our minister, the Reverend Gail Seavey, offers thought provoking readings, stories, meditations, and sermons. The services are also filled with music -- traditional, classical, bluegrass, jazz. Our music program is outstanding and is a joy for musicians and listeners alike. If you are looking for fellowship, there’s plenty of that too. We understand that community is made through participation in social activities. One way you can get to know people is by attending our Wednesday night dinners. There are also intergenerational parties, recreational outings, a fall retreat, a Sunday lunch bunch, and senior’s breakfasts among other activities in which to participate. This congregation takes an active role in promoting social justice. We strive to provide a welcome environment for all, without regard to race, gender, physical or mental disability, sexual orientation, or other characteristics that may divide people against one another. We have undertaken efforts to address problems of illiteracy, homelessness, denial of civil and marital rights, and many other conditions that challenge our society and the environment. The Task of the Religious Community The Rev. Dr. Mark Morrison-Reed, a Unitarian Universalist minister, wrote one of my favorite readings. It is called “The Task of the Religious Community.” It describes so well the value this congregation puts on the creation and nurturing of our community.
I hope you decide that there is something here you would like to explore and, if there is, I hope you will come visit this church to explore the possibilities. Ginger Brown |
